So, Airlie Beach is known mostly for it’s prime access to the beautiful Whitsunday Islands and there’s really no wondering why. The Whitsundays are absolutely gorgeous. If you haven’t already seen Whitehaven beach, it’s one of the most beautiful beaches in the world with its white sand, literally pure enough to polish your jewelry (trust me, I actually tried it). The sand never heats up or gets too hot, no matter the temperature. Honestly, the day I spent at this beach was amazing and I wish I could go back. Although, with the amount of sand I was trying to get off my clothes and out of my bags for the next week, you’d think I was there for a lot longer than a day.
We got to Whitehaven beach on these really fast boats (sorry for my super specific nautical terminology), which was super fun despite the fact I almost fell off a few times.
We also stayed one day at a resort where we did a wee bit of partying and I fed birds almonds (probably not great for them, sorry birdies!).
Not only did I get to see the amazing Whitehaven beach, but I spent a day on a yacht sailing through the islands and got to try snorkeling in a few really cool places. Langford Reef is a really cool place to go if you’re hoping to see some sea turtles. Almost everyone who got in the water saw not only one, but a few turtles swimming through this reef. Just be careful, because apparently Langford Reef has been known to have a few “marine stingers” in the water. I had to wear a really heinous cool wetsuit to protect my skin just in case.
But there’s a lot more to Airlie Beach than just the Whitsundays. Okay, maybe not a lot more. But there’s at least a few cool things to do if you have a free day there. I had one free day and me and four other girls spent it on ATVs riding through a more remote part of Airlie Beach.
A lot of Airlie Beach is just farmland. We got to see 5-6 acres of pretty much undeveloped land where I was able to spot a few wild kangeroos (sorry, no pictures though! They hop away pretty fast). At the end, we rode through a huge mud puddle which was definitely a new thing for me. I can’t say I’ve ever been this dirty.
The best part of this story is actually pretty humorous, although it definitely wasn’t at the time. When we got back to our hostel, the water line on the entire street broke so our hostel didn’t have any water. In other words, we were covered in mud with no access to showers. In the end, we got a shower, but we were pretty agitated for a little bit.
All in all, I really enjoyed my experience at Airlie beach (even though most of my time was spent in or on the water), and I would recommend it to anyone.
