¡Grande Chile Fiesta!

I’ll be honest, there are not many things in this world I love more than food. So, when I heard there was going to be a farmer’s market featuring Hatch Green Chile dishes from most of the vendors, I saved that Facebook event and told my boyfriend we were going.

He didn’t take much convincing; he saw the menu and as was convinced as I was.

The annual Green Chile Fiesta at the Heirloom Park Farmers Market did not disappoint. Apparently, this is the 13th annual festival and all I wondered was ‘how did I not hear about this during my other three years at this university.’

We started off by walking past all the vendors because everyone knows that you don’t want to spend all your cash in one place. What if they save the best vendors for last?

We passed by a variety of vendors: some made fresh pasta, flavored popcorn, a variety of kombucha, and homemade jellies. How do you expect the self-proclaimed foodie to choose between all the enticing flavors?

We ended up taking home two jars of jelly, peach habanero and pineapple habanero, and a jar of fresh salsa. We also took a breakfast pizza to-go, but we ended up eating over half of it during our 15 minutes car ride back to campus.

So what flavors did we try?

The first thing we had to try was the Hatch Green Chile Pizza from Fiamme Pizzeria. It did not disappoint and was probably the best thing we could have started with.

We then waited in line at the chef demo featuring Danny Perez of Primo Tucson. After trying his delicious chile rellano stuffed pancakes, I’ve decided no other pancakes will compare. The chile pepper was stuffed with chorizo, eggs, and cheese and then cooked inside a vanilla pancake. Additional roasted chiles and a prickly pear cactus sauce, a Tucson speciality, topped the pancake to finish it off.

We washed it down with a cold-brewed coffee from Yellow Brick Coffee Roasters. It was definitely one of the best coffees I’ve had in Arizona. Having a bit of a stuffy nose, I can’t quite tell how loud my voice is, and I ended up yelling at the poor guy selling the coffee to tell him how much I liked it.

We picked up the two jellies and the salsa and headed back to the pizza place before we left. We just had to take that breakfast pizza we were eyeing to-go.
