Why is self-love so difficult?
I ask myself this question more often than I’d like to admit. Why does it feel like I can never do enough or be enough? It’s like there aren’t enough hours in the day to be the person that I want to be. I mean, how am I supposed to get 8 hours of sleep, eat nutritious meals, work out, be presentable, go to class, do homework, go to work, and still have some leftover time to foster those personal relationships?
The truth is: I don’t have enough time in the day to do all those things every single day. I am not perfect and I never will be, no matter how hard I try.
What I do know is that I am enough.
It’s ok that I don’t look like a supermodel. It’s ok that sometimes I forget to wash my hair in the shower. Hell, it’s even ok to forget something once in a while. We’re human and part of the beauty in being human is being perfectly imperfect.
So, each and every time you say something negative about yourself, I encourage you to find 5 more things that you love about yourself. Look in the mirror and admire anything from the strength in your legs to the curve of your eyebrows. Sometimes I pick the way my jeans fit or how great the color of the top looks against my skin. It’s ok to love yourself – even if every magazine and website out there is telling you not to.
A lot of the time, it feels like the fashion industry tells me that my body type is wrong. Sometimes they don’t make things in my size or everything fits weird because I’m not built like the model the clothes were intended for.
That’s why I think fashion is so important into helping body image. Instead of focusing on all the things that I don’t like – I focus on the clothes that make me feel empowered. I focus on the clothing that highlights my best features and fits me perfectly. When you learn to love yourself and your body, you start to find out what makes you feel the most confident. That’s how my personal style first began to evolve. For example, I love blazers and button ups. High waisted jeans with tucked in shirts are my jam.
I chose this outfit for this post because it perfectly encompasses my personal style. I love how this jacket actually fits my shoulders, these jeans are my favorite pair, and the shoes add just the perfect pop of color. The shoes and jacket are from Modcloth – one of my favorite clothing sites. While they’re often known for vintage and retro looking pieces, I picked this blazer that can go from casual to work appropriate with a few swaps and these shoes because I love the mustard color. The best part about them is their inclusivity – you can find something for anyone there no matter their size or their style.
So you tell me, what’s your favorite thing about you?
